Lionheads is a small business based in Toronto, Canada, that promotes “green” (responsible) living through its products. The ingredients used to make the skin care and beauty products are vegan and mostly organic and non-GMO. Our sewn products, such as fabric masks, coffee filters, zippered pouches, and cotton pads, are reusable, made with natural fabric and/or repurposed fabric.

The owner, Carmen So, a passionate environmentalist, started this business to share her eco-friendly, vegan products with others who also wish to take small steps in caring for this planet.

One of Carmen’s big pushes in starting this business came when she realized that the best way to reduce waste is to make things herself. Primarily, by making things herself, she realized that packaging is significantly reduced. She tries her utmost to be eco-friendly in her business practices as well: re-purposed, upcycled, recyclable and recycled materials are used whenever possible, in shipping and packaging.

Carmen’s partner, a seasoned environmentalist, introduced her to a local food co-op and things took off from there. She started buying products that were organic, made or grown locally, became a vegan as she learned about the environmental impact of her consumer and lifestyle choices.

A few years ago, Carmen developed a disability known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). She became allergic to chemicals found in food, household and cosmetic products. This led her onto a DIY journey. Partly out of necessity, she developed a passion for healthy cooking and an interest in making her own cosmetics and healing potions.

Q: How are Lionheads products eco-friendly and ethical?

A: Most of Lionheads’ products are vegan and made in small batches with love in Toronto – it’s as local as it can get! Also, most of the ingredients are organic, local (Ontario/Canada), and/or non-GMO.  Lionheads does not test on animals and all of our products are vegan.*

They do not contain any petroleum-based ingredients, parabens, phenoxyethanol, hydantoin, boric acid, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), dehydroacetic acid (DHA), hydroquinone, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate, mineral oil (petroleum by-product), gelatin, lanolin, ambergris, or synthetic fragrances.

Also, unlike other “organic” products in the market, which may or may not use natural ingredients, Lionheads does NOT add harmful chemicals to its products. WE DISCLOSE ALL INGREDIENTS.

They are packaged in  aluminum and glass containers that can be recycled infinitely. For a small number of products, such as loose powder makeup, we use plastic containers, but there is a $2 discount if it is returned for refills. Lionheads encourages costumers to participate in its Deposit Program to earn a $2 discount for each returned (cleaned) glass jar on your next purchase.

*We are in the midst of updating the website so some ingredient lists may still indicate that beeswax is used. We now use candelilla wax or carnauba wax.

Q: If Lionheads products are 100% natural, what is used as a preservative?

A:  Natural ingredients such as grapefruit seed extract, sodium lactate, and/or vitamin E are used to prolong the shelf life of our products. ECOCERT Geogard ECT is used as the main preservative. It is a non-paraben, non-formaldehyde, non-isothiazolone based system and provides broad spectrum activity on bacteria, yeast and molds.

Q: How can I prolong the shelf life of my natural Lionheads products?

A: To prolong the shelf life of these natural products, store in cool temperature temperatures, and keep away from moisture and heat (the bathroom is the worst place to store our products). Always ensure that hands are clean when applying the product.

An option for those who do not have air conditioning in their home is to store the creams and deodorant (for the deodorant, remember to stir first though) in the fridge – the consistency will just be thicker.

For best results,use any of our products that contain water within 2 months of purchase. For products that do not contain water, products are in good condition for up to 1 year but best used within 6 months.

Q: There are tiny clumps in my cream, is this normal?

A: For all creams, tiny clumps may occur due to changes in temperature and humidity, which is normal – it’s just the zinc oxide powder. You can just rub it in with your fingers. This does not affect the performance of the product.

Q: There seems to be a thin white “glaze” occurring in my lip balm, is this normal?

A: Yes, it’s normal. This is likely caused by changes in humidity and temperature. It can be attributed to when the product has melted due to high temperatures during shipping or storage;  this causes a separation in the oils and colour pigmentation. In colder temperatures or climates, this product will harden; simply apply some extra friction with your fingers and the product can be applied. With the chocolate mint lip balm, this is called “blooming”; this occurs naturally with chocolate. In these instances, the white glaze is not mold.

Q: Since Lionheads products are 100% natural, does this mean that I cannot have an allergic reaction from using the products?

A: While Lionheads products are 100% natural and are non-toxic, as with any product, some people may develop an allergic reaction. Always test a small amount on the inside of your elbow, as you should with any new products.
